Overview

Virtual mathematical manipulatives have been available for the past few years on websites such as Illuminations and the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives. Despite having these tools freely available on the Internet, teachers still report both a lack of preparation and a lack of access to valuable technology tools. The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize participants with virtual manipulatives that align to concepts taught in elementary mathematics classrooms. each of the manipulatives is open-ended allowing participants to use the technology as a tool to facilitate solving real-world and complex mathematical tasks.
In this workshop participants will explore virtual manipulatives that align with elementary mathematics concepts and examine ways of designing lesson plans that integrate virtual manipulatives.

Presentaiton Outline

The BYOL session will include a variety of virtual mathematical manipulatives. The presentation will include:

  1. Overview- How can the Internet impact mathematical learning?
  2. Number Sense Activities- Computation
  3. Geometry and Measurement Activities
  4. Algebra Activities
  5. Implications of Web 2.0 technologies
  6. Conclusion and Questions
