Helping Teachers Develop as School-based Leaders. Capstone course in the mathematics specialists add-on license. Mathematical content and pedagogy designed to equip elementary teachers to become mathematics teacher-leaders in school settings. Pedagogical emphases include study of national, and state standards for mathematics teaching and learning; use of both large-scale and formative assessments to make instructional and curricular decisions; exploration of models for working with teachers as individuals or in groups; examination of curriculum and ways to modify to meet state standards; examining teacher learning in mathematics education, including facilitating workshops, coaching and working with adult learners; critical issues such as mathematics reform, parent education and grant writing. In the course, the mathematics content will cover integration of mathematical concepts and the integration of mathematics teaching throughout the elementary curriculum. Mathematical emphases include topics that are integrated within mathematical strands and with other curricula and the real world; a mathematical modeling approach to mathematics; curriculum that is modified to become more cognitively demanding; and tasks at the elementary level and beyond the elementary level.
